Book Talk

I have had NO books to read. None. Nada. okay. We have a few books here, and I have had fun re-reading middle grade books with Sydney, but I needed something new. So last week I went online to see if our library carries Hannah Coulter so I can join the Hannah Coulter Book Club For Copy Cats.

It was not a surprise to find that indeed, our library does NOT carry that book. or any others on my list.

I hate that.

Our base library is okay. The people who work there are friendly. They have books. Just not a wide variety, and not a lot of new new releases. Except movies. They do have lots of new movies. And video games. Sydney was watching for a book that was in the "in-processing" category for over a YEAR! ggrrrrr.I have found it best to browse best sellers and award winners from 2005 or earlier.

So I ordered Hannah Coulter from the nearest bookstore. Which is also small. It's not in yet. I'm going to check today, when I head out, to see if it has arrived.

I did go to the library yesterday, and came home with several books. Yeah for a pile of books, even if they weren't on my list. I feel almost anxious if I have nothing to read.

So I started reading A Great and Terrible Beauty last night and it was so scary! I had a hard time going to sleep and kept hearing scary sounds. Good thing Nathan is home! I have to finish that book today, before it gets dark...

What are you reading?

If you ever want to read any mystery/thriller/suspense, I have about 150 books.

I recently finished "The Secret Life of Bees." It was decent - not my favorite, but still good.

And I also read the latest Nicholas Sparks, "The Lucky One." I love his books!

By the way, if there's a book that I want to buy, I sometimes check half.com. They have pretty decent prices, if you don't mind a used book.

I have decided that I don't always need new books to read (although I read daily) because I have a horrible memory so I re-read my books after I forget the ending =) Can you order books from other libraries to be shipped to yours?

Kat - I'm not sure if I can handle spooky books, but I'll let you know!

Tootie - I enjoyed the Secret Life of Bees, too. I should have bought online. Next time!

Amy - I can often re-read books, too! I forget names almost as soon as I put the book down! The inter-library loans between military bases on Hawaii is okay. I should use our city library more, it's just farther away. That's how lazy I am.

I really enjoyed the Kite Runner and/or A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. You know what other book I thought you might like? Indian Creek Chronicles by Pete Fromm. It's a little slow, but draws you in because it's so beautiful.

Wow, you have the same problem I do. I went to the library yesterday looking for a book that my hubby wanted and another that I wanted. It seems that every time there is a book I want to read the waiting list for the one copy avaiable is 12-13 people long. Or they just don't have the book at all. Can be frustrating when I am looking for something to read.

Wendy, you should join goodreads.com. You can go on there and rate books you've read (either just give it a rating out of 5 stars or actually write a review) and then you can connect with friends and see what they have liked. It's really helped me get ideas for what to read next! I will TOTALLY be your friend on goodreads and Mary is on there as well. Because I harassed her about it until she finally signed up. And right now I'm reading "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. I recommend anything by Bill Bryson, he's hilarious. His memoir "Adventures of the Thunderbolt Kid" and "Walk in the Woods" (about hiking the Appalachian Trail) are two of my favorites.

PS I'm feeling like this is my first time actually commenting on your blog. I've been stalking you forever--I love the way you write!

I just finished reading the 4th book in the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz.
And now I am bookless :(

I will give A Great and Terrible Beauty a try as you promised it to be scary :)

Right now I'm just reading textbooks, which are no fun! Boo! But I did finally read some Shannon Hale books last summer and I enjoyed them! Life is always more interesting when there is a good book. Especially if you get to snuggle up on the couch with a blanket! :) Good luck finding one that you can read after dark! ;)

Hi Wendy Vee here! I picked up this book a couple of days ago and haven't put it down since. Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. A historical novel, about one girl's account of the leprosy settlement in Moloka'i in the 1890's. I'm hoping to blog about it a little more as soon as I'm finished. Plus, I thought you'd be extra interested since you are in Hawaii! Happy Reading!
