Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus

Nathan gave me scuba lessons as my Christmas present this year. He was already scuba certified, and he wanted me as a dive buddy. It was a week long class involving book work, swimming in a pool, and diving in the ocean. I think that class was the first bit of adult education I have ever done. (Kind of sad if you think about it.) And I had a great time.

Fish are friends, not food!

I was really nervous before our first dive - would I be able to breathe, would I get lost, would I have a panic attack under water? I was especially scared that I would get water in my mask, then lose a contact and not be able to see. That is something that still worries me, but so far I have had no problems with my contacts, but lots of problems with my mask fogging up.

One thing we learned in our class is that objects in water appear closer and bigger than they really are. Does that wet suit make my butt look big?

These are more pictures from our dive this weekend. I really like that underwater camera. There are all kinds of cool fishies, just waiting to get their pictures taken.
We have been lucky enough to see turtles on each of our dives so far. "Dude? Dude? Focus dude... Dude?"

Later dudes!

I can't tell you how cool I think it is that you scuba dive, AND it gives you the opportunity to spend time with your husband! Far out dude!

As far as the underwater camera goes, are they expensive? I would imagine they are. Disposable underwater cameras aren't that much, are they? But I suppose a digital one would be better so you could delete not-so-good pics.

I remember snorkeling when we were in Maui (yikes, 11 years this summer! way too long....gotta go again!). Did they suggest to spit into your face mask to help with fogging? At least I think that is what I heard. Gross, but hey if it works who cares! : )

Way to go with conquering any fears you had with diving (or continual conquering of said fears) :)

So incredibly cool!!!

Deanne - he said his camera was about $100. But it turns out that Nathan has an underwater regular (non-digital) camera. I think I will buy some film for our next dive. and, we have some fancy anti-fog stuff, it kind of works. And I have tried my spit, it kind of works, too. I think the problem is that my mask is still new and may need to be cleaned a little better.

Hey, we are watching Finding Nemo right now while Rand is trying to nap. How appropriate!

"Dude, Mr. Turtle is my father..."

I'm very impressed by you conquering this fear too. I think I would panic. These scuba posts make me regret being so inflexible with work and kind of poor when we lived in Monterey so I didn't feel like we could do something like this, though we saw scuba divers and snorklers in the bay all the time. Missed opportunity!

Have you thought of taking any other adult-ed classes?

i love the turtles.

I think you are very brave. DH loves the water and I like it so long as my face stays dry.
I showed him your pics last night while I sat blogging in bed on my handy dandy laptop and he was jealous and proclaimed you "coolest wife ever".

Donna - you made me blush

TXmommy - you, too.

Mary - maybe. Sometime. Soon John will be in school. Maybe cake decorating?

Wendy, I think a cake class would be so fun for you - you are already so creative with your kids cakes! I've been wanting to take an art class of some kind, like quilting or photography or something I've never actually properly learned to do. Like you said, maybe!

I love sea turtles. Love them.
You are a brave woman. All the things that worried you are on my mind, getting lost, panick attack, lost contact, etc.
You are an inspiration to non-mermaids everywhere.

How fun Wendy! Love the pictures!
I've been looking into SCUBA classes. I just don't think it's going to work. 2 nights a week for 6 weeks. 6:30-10:30 each time, then a weekend up at the Hood Canal-driving and lodging my expense. I want to do it all in a week like you!
