I'm hoping you can help me with a little decorating question.
I am not much of a decorator. In fact, this move was the first time that I have put curtains up in my house. Ever. I love my blue curtains and the way they blow in the evening breeze, but my house is still a little bare.
Hannah says not to think of it as bare, but as having clean lines.
I like that, but we have one gigantic wall that I would like to put a picture or two on, and I was thinking you might be able to help me make a decision.
Option #1 is to wait until we have family photos taken at the beach and make up a family collage on that wall. I love the Galleries done by Lisa Russo, but the problem I see is that i hate to have to straigten a lot of different picture frames.
Option #2 is a large map of the world. Kind of antique like. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but I'm not sure. The furniture in this room is dark. Dark brown leather sofa and love seat, dark walnut 100 year old piano, and dark tv hutch. I especially like the blue in the map. I think it would be nice with my blue curtains, blue patterned pillows and blue vases. But I'm worried that with all the other grown up furniture, the map will seem a bit stuffy.
Option #3 is 2 or 3 vintage Hawaiian Travel posters. I love these, as you might be able to tell from my blog, and I think we could have fun with them here. But maybe they are too silly, and would I really want them when we move in a couple years?
Option #4 - ???
*******
I'm also searching for some patio furniture....

i like all your ideas. I have a serious dislike on blank walls. I am sitting here looking at my college of small picture frames filled with friends and family ... all crooked ... and I love it that way.
If it were my tiki hut, I might go with the vintage posters. I have a sneaky suspicion that this land has such a magical impact on you that you will want to take a bit of it with you. And posters can do that very easily. Good luck! :D
well...all three sound really really cute.
I think I'll vote for the posters. Even if you grew tired of them later they'd be so cute now...if they are not super expensive. That would be my only worry. I wouldn't want to spend 100s on something I would only use for 2-3 years.
I like all the ideas too. I have a hard time decorating, so I understand why its hard to decide. If you go with the posters (which I think are really cute and fun), you could always reuse them later or elsewhere in a kids' bedroom or a den or playroom or something.
Good luck filling up the blank space, I'm still working on it and I've been in my house now for 5 1/2 years (wow, has it been that long?).
I vote for the family collage or the posters. Both would be fun and cute. I love seeing people's family pictures in their houses. I agree with whoever said that the posters could be reused in a different space after you move.
The map is pretty, but maybe you could save that for a den or office.
I like the family picture collage idea. I like rooms where you can tell that a real family lives there. LOL.
To me, the posters are a bit fun and silly, but not really for a living room - maybe a kid's room or a rec room or a mud room or something.
The map is a bit stuffy. Maybe it's because my grandparents had a map like that growing up. Maybe you could jazz it up a bit with a fun frame or something.
I think you need to post a picture of your bare wall and curtains. Then we could know for sure.
I am horrid at decorating. I too think you will want to take Hawaii with you. Perhaps you can find a local artist, or college student that could do something for you a watercolor or oil. One never knows..
I vote with Mary 100% :)
I am fond of the vintage posters, however the family pic would be very nice too. My suggestion....put up a large family picture then you could have smaller travel prints next to it.
So I think I have 4 votes for vintage posters and 3? for family photos so far.
Army wife, I've been on the look out for local art I can afford, and I think it's hopeless. But I hadn't thought of a student... good idea.
I vote for the family collage or like Army Wife said- a local student could maybe paint a painting or a murel (I totally can't think how to spell it!! Ack!) on the wall itself.
Ooh I agree with Mary and Nikko. I'd say the posters, which could be put in another room later, or some family pics. The world map would be great for a den or office someday.
Any way you choose, I think all 3 choices would look nice. It's just the personality you want to present to your guests that come. :)
Ooh, I see Mary gets 2 votes (NCS and Suzanne are my favorites)
I'll give Mary another vote.:D I love family pictures!! I think the posters would be fun for a family room, even after you move, and the map would be nice for a den.
I noticed you mentioned on tori's blog that you are still waiting to meet Sawyer. When you do, please get his autograph for me. Also if it isn't too much trouble, could you get a picture of him too, with his shirt off. Oh, I forgot you dont like naked/no shirt men, forget the picture. An autograph would be fine. (BTW, I am totally kidding, please don't tell anyone that I asked you for a no shirt picture of Sawyer, it might ruin my reputation ;)
Amanda - you make a good point - maybe I should just hang (signed) photos of Sawyer with or without his shirt on.... that would look real classy in my living room!
I say two posters on one wall and a grouping of family pictures on another wall.
I'd have to say that I agree with Army wife. Paintings by student artists. Most colleges and universities have school papers and bulletin boards in the information centers where you could put up your request.
I also have to say I love the the family pictures idea... probably because I have two walls along my hallway that are covered with photo frames. (and yes, they are always slightly crooked. I think it's part of the charm!)
By the way... you've been tagged. :oP
I'm all about a family collage. That will never go "out of style." Then again, I'm the girl who flew her interior designer sister-in-law in to help me decorate. :-)
maybe I should just hang (signed) photos of Sawyer with or without his shirt on
There's your option #4! That would make for some interesting dinner guest conversations! lol
donna - that's just what I'm thinking!
Lemon stand - whew - I was freah out of ideas, thanks (I think, I haven't checked what I've been tagged for) for tagging me!
Amber - I wonder if you sil is interested in a trip....
Amanda - oh, yeah!
