Surf Club *updated

The mom's surf club meets today. We'll be meeting up in Haleiwa, at Ali'i beach, at 3pm, if you want to join us. The Surf Report says that the conditions are fair and that the waves will be a steady 1-2 feet. Just right for beginning surfers (or surf wannabes) like me.

I'm not asking for much here, just a chance to stand on the board. Just one swell that pushes me and the board toward shore. I don't need to be able to do this:

Or this:

I'll let you know how it goes.

Planning to visit soon? Try brushing up on your surfing skillz here.

*Here it is, my Surf Report:

The good news: I am proud to announce that I stood on the board, with both feet...but only for like a half a second before I rolled into the water.

The bad news: I only got up that once. After that I paddled like crazy and felt the waves pushing, but I didn't get on my feet.

I was having fun, until some dad started giving me tips. At first I thought that was nice. Then it started to annoy me. And when I got out of the water and found the same dad sitting on the beach near us, ready to offer a few more handy tips, I started to feel a bit grouchy.

I gave him the stink eye and sat out until he and his family finally left. The more I think about it (and I'm thinkin' about it plenty) the more I think he was really just trying to be helpful - he's probably a real nice guy and a great dad.

And probably it's my pride that's a little hurt. All right? I'll be the first to admit that I don't know what I'm doing. Okay? I'm not ashamed to tell you that my arms are sore from all that paddling. Got it? So stop watching me, it's starting to creep me out.

I can't wait to get out there and try again!

Wow. Heck with playgroup or bookclub. You've got a better deal. What could be more cool than mom's surf club?

Let us know how it goes!

That is so exciting, and I have to admit a little scary.

Now I have the theme from "Hawaii Five-oh" in my head. ;)

I second nikko's comment. We lead a very boring life her in the land locked state of South Dakota.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Good luck and I hope you can catch some waves!

I was going to express envy, but then realized I'm too much of a chicken to feel that way. =P Good for you!

How fun! That's way cooler than your run of the mill play group! How did you do?

That does sound like a blast, even if it is hard work. But keep getting back up. It looks like you've got a lot of ladies behind you supporting you in this endeavor! Just remember that next time and we'll be there to help you get up and stay up!

So jealous. SOOOOO jealous. SO SO SO SO SO jealous!!
My hubby is a surfer- grew up in So Cal and lived in Hawaii for a while. He has a lot of family there. Our entire marriage he's been telling me he'll teach me to surf. Every summer we've gone to Cali I have been pregnant. But not anymore. Next time I am SO surfing. And when I make it to Hawaii, I'll look you up. Of course, you'll be surfin' with Kelly Slater by then, but whatever.

I am exceedingly impressed. Seriously.

I'd love to learn to surf but 1) no water here 2) I can't stand to get my face wet.

Yes, you heard me correctly. I mean, I don't mind SCUBA or snorkeling but there is something about getting dunked. Over and over again. Which is exactly what I'd be doing on a surfboard (or should I say OFF?)... :-)

Can't wait to hear your progress!

i am jealous that you got to swim in the ocean. i haven't been able to do that for years. not because i can't, i've just been surrounded by land the last few years... i say keep at it. maybe by the time you PCS you'll have gotten the hang of it.

A Mom Surf club? You're awesome! I laughed loudly at the "Stink Eye."

Mary said...

Haha! Wendy, I love that stink eye of yours. Way to go, standing up even once sounds great to me!

Great job standing up! You will do better next time! It reminds me of trying to waterski with ward members. They try to be helpful, and they are, but it is really embarassing.
